Whether you’ve completed your Emergenetics® Profile or not, you might be curious about the tool and its applications. Here are 10 common questions about our psychometric instrument.
1. What Is the Emergenetics Profile?
The Emergenetics Profile is a personality assessment that reveals your preferences for thinking and behaving.
These preferences reflect the tendencies that come most naturally to you. They emerge from BOTH your genetics (DNA) and your life experiences.
2. How Did the Emergenetics Profile Come About?
In the early 1990s, Drs. Geil Browning and Wendell Williams identified a gap in existing psychometric assessments. At the time, nothing on the market made the connection between behavior and thinking styles, which resulted in an incomplete picture of how individuals process information and engage with others.
They set out to create a comprehensive and easily understandable instrument to empower people to realize why they and others think and behave the way they do.
The creators developed a questionnaire, tested more than 10,000 people from diverse populations, analyzed the data, made refinements and assessed the instrument for validity and reliability before the final questionnaire was completed in 1991.
3. How Valid Is the Emergenetics Profile?
To determine if a psychometric instrument can be trusted, professionals look at validity and reliability. Validity determines if the tool measures what it is supposed to measure, while reliability evaluates whether the assessment provides consistent and accurate measurements. We can confidently say that our results are reliable and valid as affirmed in our Technical Report, which you can find on our website.
Every two years, our team evaluates data collected from the questionnaires and re-norms the assessment to reflect the global population. As a result, participants can feel confident they are receiving accurate, consistent insights into their Thinking and Behavioral preferences.
4. How Does the Profile Compare to Other Tools?
Every personality assessment offers value, and we believe Emergenetics is a better choice because:
5. What Are the Attributes that Make Up the Assessment?
There are four Thinking and three Behavioral attributes, which are explained in the diagram below:
6. How Do I Read the Emergenetics Profile Report?
1. Pie Chart colored in Blue, Green, Red and Yellow is derived from your percentile scores and illustrates how your Thinking preferences compare to each other. It reflects, in percentages, the Thinking Attributes you rely on most. We define anything above 23% as a preference.
2. The bar charts in four colors show your Thinking Attributes in percentiles. You can see at a glance the amount of energy you invest in Analytical, Structural, Social and Conceptual Thinking. The bars also reveal how your individual results compare to the population at large.
3. The bar charts in shades of purple illustrate your Behavioral Attributes in percentiles. You can see at a glance the ways in which you typically exhibit Expressiveness, Assertiveness and Flexibility. The results compare your preferences to the population at large.
7. How Can I Apply my Emergenetics Results?
We always recommend starting by reviewing your Profile and Narrative Report. It can also be useful to review the Fundamentals of Emergenetics eLearning, if you have access to it in Emergenetics+.
As you review your resources, consider the following questions:
- How does the results resonate with me?
- In which situations do my Thinking and Behavioral preferences support my work?
- Where do I lose energy?
- What are my brilliances
- What are my blind spots?
- How do my preferences impact how I’m communicating, collaborating and connecting?
Then, you can start to integrate these considerations into your work and implement the tips from the Attributes in Action guides in the app to optimize your own performance.
8. How Can I Use Emergenetics within a Team?
The benefits of Emergenetics are magnified when you use it to support collaboration. Our workshops and tools help departments, cross-functional teams and groups improve communication, productivity and more.
Our essential workshops – the Meeting of the Minds and Team Dynamics for Small Groups – introduce participants to our seven Attributes and provide interactive experiences where teams can learn to use their strengths to achieve collective results. Using the Emergenetics+ portal or mobile app, participants can also create Saved Groups for the teams they work with most often to discover collective preferences as well as potential blind spots. The app also provides tips and summaries to empower groups to work together more effectively, considering their Emergenetics results.
